How it works

How the FishingPals are organized

The trip is organized every year by Eric and Fred. We make an attempt to get a good idea of the number of people interested in going, and then we plan our supplies accordingly. We try to have the trip in July or August every year after most of the bugs are gone. If we are planning a fly-in fishing trip, Eric usually handles the reservations as well as gather everyone's deposits for the trip.

A few days before the trip begins, we do the grocery shopping. We've been using the same basic grocery list for the past few years, but we have been slowly fine tuning it. We should get it right next year. The out-of-towners will usually show up a day or so before the trip begins. We usually head up to the Gravenhurst area the night before, right after work. Eric and Ron have cottages where we can stay overnight which saves us a couple of hours of driving the next morning. Marc has a cottage up there also. Our normal routine is to get up early, wait for Ben, and then head north.

The majority of our trips in the past have been to fly-in camps built by an outfitter. Most camps have at least three or four boats and we try to have two people in each boat. Gas is included and we have never run out of gasoline yet. The camps are equipped with propane stoves and refridgerators. Some camps will even have a sauna. Our sleeping accommodations consist of bunk beds, as well as a few tents. Ear plugs are a good idea... Recently, we have had access to a camp which doesn't require a flight into the lake.

The chores around the camp are all done voluntarily and we never have any problems (yeah, I know, I still don't believe it). It's rare to have a group that can get everything done this way. The only responsibility is that as we rotate through the lineup, two people are designated to prepare dinner each night. Otherwise, the other duties such as dishes, hauling water, gathering wood, etc. all get magically accomplished. Hopefully, we can maintain this level of commitment.

We usually have one fish dinner in there towards the end of the trip. It gives us enough time to scout the lake out and make sure we catch enough for dinner. Ben usually makes a steamed fish plate with an elaborate set of utensils for steaming the fish. It's become a tradition.

Catching the fish is accomplished with a cooler full of beverages and snacks. We usually have a supply of spicy cacciatore sausage, with cheese and crackers. The obligatory junk food is a must. We have been using a variety of baits such as worms, minnows and artificial lures with varying degrees of success with each. A combination of still fishing as well as trolling is usually attempted to determine the best approach.

We try to record all of our activities with cameras or video camcorders. During the earlier years, digital cameras weren't available and most of the photos have been scanned. With the availability of the newer digital cameras, it has become easier to collect and distribute images of our adventures.

At the end of the trip, Fred organizes the pictures and comments, and posts them on a website. We have been using 'free' webspace in the past, but with the complaints of pop-up ads, and banner advertising, we have decided to pay for a legit webspace and domain. As well, if enough video footage is available, a DVD may be created to memorialize the trip. Hopefully, we become popular, generate a lot of cyber traffic, sell a lot of products, and retire on the profits... Current sales projections have Eric and Fred reaching this plateau around 2025.
